Furachan / © Francis Harrison       Project : Sa Dec's sad song
I went to Sa Dec, a sad little town in the Delta, to walk in the footsteps of Marguerite Duras, the Indochina born French writer and author of "L'Amant". She left there for France in 1931. She never returned... By the time she, her two brothers and her demented mother settled in Sa Dec, the family occupied the lowest tier of the colonial strata, an impoverished crew of French gypsies wearing hand-me-down clothes and dreaming of life...elsewhere...anywhere.

At 15 Duras met a Chinese Vietnamese man more than ...

Furachan / © Francis Harrison       Project : Through a tinted window
Rode in a tiny Kia from Chau Doc to Sa Dec. Three and half hours isn't such a long time except if you're stuck in the back of a Chinese car in like 40 degree heat with a broken air conditioner, looking out at the world though tinted windows.

All I could do to keep from going insane in the heat was shoot the odd picture out that tinted window, which I found produced a strong amber tone I sort of liked, like a heavy filter in a movie.

So here are a few scenes from that hot, short ...

My second attempt at uploading this mini project...

A simple record of a few hours spent in Vung Tau, Saigon's closest main beach, in what used to be the Cap St Jacques, a resort popular with the French in colonial tmes. It's a quick 1.5 hrs ride away in a hydrofoil.

The whole series is kind of an exploration of color I guess.

sandip / © Sandip Debnath       Project : Bagalkot, Aftermath of Flood

Recent floods in the northern districts of Karnataka as well as in the state of Andhra Pradesh have caused an unprecedented damage to life and property. The death toll in Karnataka alone went up to 192 and as many as 17 million people were affected in some way or the other by the rising waters. Over 2 lakh homes collapsed or endured huge damages. The floods did not spare agricultural lands and farmers could only stare at their standing crops being washed away. The state government estimates the total loss to be ...

Furachan / © Francis Harrison       Project : TET Fever
Nothing in the West comes close to encapsulating Vietnam's Tet festivities. More than Xmas and regular New Year's rolled into one, it is like the focal point of veeryone's mad energies for a couple of weeks in February. Heavily influenced by CHina's long domination of the country and certainly a cousin of the Chinese New Year, Tet nontheless manages to have its own flavor, its own aura.

I was just in Vietnam during the week preceding Tet (in fact I left on  the Eve of the start of Tet) and saw many manifestations ...

Without actually realising it I was photographing a lot in and around the buildings from one architect: Renaat Braem.
For both "around the block" and "O joy" these buildings in my own neighbourhood and in Hoboken attracted me. I was onto something but did not see what was right in front of me.

One guy, one building style (heavily influenced by Le Corbusier).
Some of these buildings are being heavily renovated and are loosing the characteristics of the original architecture. Many are glad as these blocks are often ...

My black and white project on Manhattan is full.
I have been working on the Lower East Side of Manhattan lately.
I will hopefully have enough for a project in its own.
Still a lot of wides, you may get some color shots too this time.

This is the second part of A call from Benares.
One more time I hope to restitute the mood of this intriguing city.

  AnimeshRay / © Animesh Ray       Project : 3 Tier
One of the lasting influences of the British in India is its railways.  Then there is the 3 tier class.  Romantic, laden with heavy memories for me; "cattle truck" for Ron S.  I took a 3 tier overnight to Varanasi.  The train was 6 hours late on the way there, and 7 hours late on the way back.

Furachan / © Francis Harrison       Project : Cholon dreaming
Cholon, Ho Chi Minh City's venerable Chinatown, sprawls hysterically across District 5 and 10, and it is there that you will find the old Saigon more or less intact. Whereas tourists invariably stay in the ritzy, over-commercialized District 1 around Dom Khoy street, the spirit of Saigon just passes them by.

Cholon, with its myriad street markets, decrepit French houses and Chinese signs is a living dream, a tribute to the past and the mercantile energy of a Southern Vietnam that never managed to be entirely ...
