Now that I have taken the plunge seriously into digital I don't have negatives any more. I have been backing up on backup hard drives, but it seems too flimsy to me...should I not make DVD backups of all image files?

Definitely backup you backup. Hard drives do crash. I can tell you my horror story; first my computer crashed. Luckily I had my images backed up on a 500gb Lacie harddrive (porche disign). I made a switch to mac for a new computer, hooked up the external drive and transferred all the data to the mac.....when it was finished transfering the files the Lacie also died on me. I was lucky it didn't go belly-up during transfer!!

I wouldn't go the dvd route as you'll be filling these up like crazy....why not get 2 1TB harddrives and keep them synchronised?
Memory is cheap these days.....
