Here is a link to William Gedney's photographs of India: http://scriptorium.lib.duke.edu/gedney/thumbs/india/
Actually it is a collection of images nearly exclusively from Varanasi and Calcutta, with just a minor few from some other places which might be along the railway link between the two cities. The dates of these images are not mentioned, but judging from few of the landmarks in Calcutta, the style of eyeglass frames in vogue, and from movie posters, I can place most of the photographs in three chronological groups: early to mid 1960s, early 1970s, and ~1980-1986 (very few near the end of the series appear to be of this last period). This must be the largest collection of photos available on the web from these two cities in this period. Some of the images are exquisite, others are not so great, but they all are suffused with a detached but sensitive vision. Having come across this collection I feel that I have regained a portion of India that I thought I had lost.

Surprise surprise...there is even a shot of Satyajit Ray at the editing table, probably with Dulal Dutta: http://scriptorium.lib.duke.edu/gedney/photographs/IN/IN08/IN0850-72dpi.jpeg
